Charcoal prints on which the artist has reworked by hand with writing and colors
Ma Samaritaine 2018
A graduate of the Beijing school of fine arts, Gao Bo initially pursued documentary photography, including trips to Tibet. However, he rapidly abandoned color and instantaneous shots for black and white, subsequently turning to portraits with a large format field camera. His faces wore masks to metaphorically evoke the political situation in Tibet, and the artist took to writing on his large format prints, scratching the negatives and creating installations, including his portraits and videos of people facing the death sentence. He developed a plastic and relentlessly inquisitive approach to photography.
